Meet Filipino-Canadian actor Gordon Cormier, the lead of the new Avatar series

The latest version of Avatar: The Last Airbender has revived nostalgia among people who grew up enthralled with the high-fantasy epic developed by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon in the early 2000s.

It resurrects the classic lines delivered by the waterbending teacher Katara at the beginning of the series:

“Water, earth, fire, and air.” Long ago, the four countries lived in harmony. Then, everything changed as the Fire Nation struck. Only the Avatar, who mastered all four elements, could stop them. But just when the world needed him the most, he disappeared.”

At the heart of this revival is Gordon Cormier, the Filipino-Canadian actor who plays the protagonist character Aang from the Southern Air Temple. Cormier gives depth and sincerity to the part of the Avatar, who is tasked with restoring peace among countries.
