Breaking: VP Sara Duterte Resigns from Key Cabinet Roles, Effective July 19, 2024!

Vice President Sara Duterte announced her resignation as Secretary of the Department of Education and Vice Chairperson of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC) on Wednesday. This resignation will be effective from July 19, 2024, as confirmed by the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

PCO Secretary Cheloy Garafil stated that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has accepted Duterte’s resignation. Duterte did not provide specific reasons for her departure but will continue to serve as the Vice President. “We thank her for her service,” Garafil added in a brief statement.

The PCO has yet to announce a successor for Duterte in the Department of Education.

The resignation comes amidst ongoing political tension between the Duterte and Marcos families. Former President Rodrigo Duterte, Sara’s father, had publicly criticized President Marcos, leading to strained relations, particularly after a controversial incident at a Davao City rally. Despite these tensions, Marcos previously stated there was no need to replace Duterte in his Cabinet (MindaNews) (DepEd).
