Pacquiao Sets Sights on WBC Welterweight Crown: A Legendary Comeback in the Making

June 23, 2024 — Former eight-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has announced his intention to compete for the WBC welterweight crown, sparking excitement across the boxing world. The Filipino icon, now 45, is gearing up for what could be a monumental challenge in his storied career.

Pacquiao is set to face Japanese kickboxer Chihiro Suzuki in Saitama on July 28. Contrary to speculation, Pacquiao insists this three-round bout is a “serious fight, not an exhibition.” However, it appears that the fight is also a stepping stone towards a greater goal: challenging newly-crowned WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios before the end of the year.

Sean Gibbons, head of MP Promotions, confirmed the Saitama bout and ongoing talks for a potential duel with Barrios. “Manny’s first world title was with the WBC, and he’d like to end his career with another WBC title, bringing his career full circle,” said Gibbons. “This is about paying respect to the WBC. You know Manny, he loves to fight and he’ll give his 100 percent in the ring. This would be his legacy fight if it happens.”

Pacquiao has not fought a professional bout since losing the WBA welterweight crown to Yordenis Ugas in Las Vegas in 2021. He returned to the ring in 2022 to defeat MMA fighter DK Yoo in a six-round exhibition in South Korea. Although a planned exhibition match against Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek in Bangkok last April did not materialize, Pacquiao remains focused on his comeback.

Mario Barrios, 29, recently elevated to full WBC welterweight champion status, holds a record of 29-2 with 18 KOs. Barrios’ youth, height, and reach—standing six feet tall with a 71-inch wingspan—contrast with Pacquiao’s 5’5 1/2″ frame and 67-inch reach. Despite these physical advantages, Barrios has never faced a legend of Pacquiao’s caliber. His only losses were to Keith Thurman and Gervonta Davis.

Pacquiao’s experience and skill are seen as major advantages in this potential matchup. His determination to reclaim a WBC title demonstrates his unwavering passion for the sport. Fans worldwide eagerly await Pacquiao’s return to the ring, anticipating what could be one of the most memorable fights in boxing history.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops and as Manny Pacquiao prepares to reclaim his place at the pinnacle of boxing.
