Japan Accuses China of Hindering Freedom of Navigation

June 20, 2024

In a significant development, Japan has openly accused China of obstructing freedom of navigation in both the East China Sea and the West Philippine Sea. During a press conference held today, Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi expressed grave concerns over what he described as aggressive maneuvers by Chinese vessels in contested waters.

“China’s actions are not only provocative but also pose a serious threat to the principles of free and open maritime access,” Kishi stated. He emphasized that these actions could potentially escalate tensions in the region, which is crucial for international trade and regional security.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry reiterated its serious concern over the increasing tension in the West Philippine Sea, highlighting “repeated actions which obstruct freedom of navigation and increase regional tensions, including recent dangerous actions that resulted in damage to a Filipino vessel and injuries to Filipinos onboard.” The ministry condemned any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force and actions that increase tensions in the area, citing the Joint Vision Statement from the leaders of Japan, the Philippines, and the United States in April 2024.

“Japan is concerned by unlawful maritime claims and steadfastly opposes the dangerous and coercive use of Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels in the South China Sea,” the ministry added. Japan also commended the Philippines for consistently complying with the Arbitral Tribunal’s award regarding disputes between the Philippines and China, showing its commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes.

In response, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian reiterated China’s stance, asserting their sovereignty over the disputed areas and dismissing Japan’s accusations as baseless. “China has every right to conduct patrols in its own waters. We urge Japan to respect our sovereignty and refrain from actions that could complicate the situation,” Zhao said.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, with many expressing concerns over the potential for miscalculation and conflict. The United States, a key ally of Japan, has also weighed in, urging China to respect international maritime laws and avoid actions that could destabilize the region.

As tensions simmer, both nations are calling for diplomatic dialogues to resolve the disputes peacefully. However, the path to a resolution remains uncertain, with both sides holding firm on their territorial claims. The international community continues to advocate for a rules-based order in the region, emphasizing the importance of freedom of navigation for global trade and security.
